What Remains

‘for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.’

1 Peter 1:24-25

We live in a culture that sets a high priority on looks. If we look at any type of SNS, we will see pages and pages of this focus on what we have or our image. The apostle Peter is saying that we are to not let ourselves be so focused on the things that are fleeting. All the things of this world are on its way out, including us. Our investments should be in the things that will remain. After we pass on, our possessions and even money will be distributed or thrown out. Those possessions may have some longevity to some degree, but they too will pass away. Our looks fade with time no matter how much we try to slow down or “reverse” it. Our prime years will soon be over and if not well invested, we can end up with dust. Peter writes that in our lifetime we should be investing ourselves in that which lasts forever, the word of the Lord. It doesn’t only mean to be studying His word, rather it means that we should be actively pursuing to find our fulfillment and satisfaction in Jesus, the One who saved us.  Our hearts should be focusing on fulfilling His Word in our lives, for from it will fruits of the Spirit appear.

Living the Word of God has been calling me over the past week. So much that it feels like I should stop reading the Bible to actually do what it says. James 4:17 states “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” Reading the word is crucial but actually doing what it says is even more vital. What will remain after I am gone will not be that I read the Bible? Rather, how I lived it will be what remains. By leaving a legacy of following and obeying Christ, I will obtain fruit that will last forever because it was based on God’s Word.

Dear Jesus, I am thankful for blessing me with today! Thank you for sharing your words with me and I pray that I will put what I read in your Word, into action. I pray for the courage and boldness to put your Words into action so what remains is solid and firm in you! I love you and ask this in Your Name, Jesus! Amen!
