Luke 8:14 ESV
14And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.”
What has God spoken to you about? Be careful and let it be solidly planted in you that when challenges come, you will not be pulled away from those words. Let them take root and produce fruit. Jesus warns that there will be things that will try and come to steal the seed or choke out the hope from the Word we have received. This why it is important to write down the Word we received such that when situations arise, we have the very Word God had prepared us with available. We can look back to see what Jesus said about a certain situation.
Additionally, Jesus desires us to not only be hearers also doers of the Word. The Word we hear needs to take root and be engrained into our life.If we only satisfy ourselves with one meal a week, how healthy is that? Jesus is saying church once a week is great, but if we forget the message as soon as we leave, we are not really listening. We will encounter so many things in life and having the wisdom and spiritual health from consistently being in God’s Word will help us to remain firm in our faith when storms arise.
I can say I am a forgetful person and I the things the Lord may speak to me gets quickly forgotten as soon as I close the Bible or the app. How can I be a doer and not just a hearer?
- I need to share or teach what I learn. I think having a discussion with others, like my wife, FUSE, or others to share views and help each other grow.
- I also may need to share my devotions and encourage others to share their devotions that we all can benefit from the Word Jesus has spoken to us.
- Perhaps putting Post-It notes on my screen and/or computer, so I am constantly reminded of the verse God spoke to me about.
Jesus, thank you for your Word. Thank you for speaking to me and I chose to be a listener and doer of your Word. I ask that you break this spirit of disorganization and forgetfulness and help me to remember your Words. I love you! Amen!
