Making Disciples

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

Recently I heard a message from Ps. Patrick McFall which he said about the calling of a Christian consists in 3 things:

1. Love God

2. Love People

3. Make Disciples

Today’s scripture is focus on the third “Make Disciples”. It is known as “The Great Commission”. Our church’s vision on growth and multiplication is based on “The Great Commission”. It is a cycle and we resume it in 4 “E”s: Evangelism, Edification, Equipping and Extension.

Evangelism: Jesus commanded us to “go and make disciples of all nations”. It is not about waiting people to come to church, but it is to go where they are.

Edification: the first step after a person recognize Jesus as His only and sufficient Saviour is to “baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, to publicly decide to be a follower of Jesus and announce that to the whole world through the baptism. It is the first steps as a young believer to know more about Jesus.

Equipping: is a stage to prepare the believers to understand their calling and prepare them to be the future leaders of the church, “teaching them to obey everything” Jesus has commanded us.

Extension: is to plant more churches. Not only a struct or a physical building. But to send out leaders that would start new churches in their home and community. It is to support and be involved actively into the expansion of the Kingdom of God, not only in our neighborhood, but outside of our comfort zone, to all nations. Returning to the cycle of Evangelize.

As we answer the calling to love God, to love people and to make disciples, we must understand that we aren’t part of only one of the 4 “E”s, but we should be involved in all the steps of “The Great Commission”. It is about making disciples in our journey of life, to baptize them, to teach them to obey Jesus and teach others to follow the same steps.

Father, recently we started to do evangelism outside of church in Sakuragicho. I pray that your Holy Spirit guides us to spread the gospel in creative ways, to show your love to the world. Let us shine our lights into the darkness and bring glory to your name. In Jesus name I pray.
