“Then he said, ‘Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.’”
Luke 12:15 NLT
“Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, ‘That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing.’”
Luke 12:22-23 NLT
The original word used for “greed” in this text, means a greedy desire to have more, to desire for other’s possession, or the fear of loosing the things a person have. Jesus warns us to perceive and to guard ourselves against any kind of thoughts towards material things. Because life is not about what or how much things you own. Life is more than food and clothing.
Jesus here is teaching something very important: the priorities we give in life. In the same chapter he teaches:
- to fear God (v.5)
- to don’t store up earthly wealth (v.21)
- to store up treasures in heavens (v.33)
Lord, thank you for this Saturday. Protect our bodies in this winter and the contagious sickness that its bring. Help us to perceive and to guard our hearts from desire things that will lead us to greed. Give us what we need. In Jesus name I pray.
