“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.”
Matthew 15:8-9 NLT
In this text Jesus is speaking about a group of people which was asking Jesus why his disciples weren’t keeping the old traditions. And Jesus’ answer was that some people keep their traditions but do not obey what God had commanded them. It was like wearing a mask.
It is not my place to judge who is and who isn’t truly worshiping God with their hearts. But what I can do is to look inside myself and see if my lips are speaking words that reflects what is inside my heart, specially when I worship with songs. It is really easy to sing lies while worshipping, specially if our hearts are far away from God.
This verse teaches me that even when I honor God with my lips, if my heart is far away from God, my worship is not true. And God know what goes inside of my heart.
Lord, teach me how to honor you. To be close to you should always be my priority always. Please, help me to grow my heart closer to you. In Jesus name.
