“Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.””
Genesis 32:28 NIV
At this point, Jacob’s life was very messed up. He ran away from home afraid that his older brother would kill him. He struggled with Laban, and ran away too. Jacob’s name was given to him with the meaning of “the one who follows on another’s heels”. Jacob’s attitudes in life showed his character to be a cheater.
This chapter shows that Jacob was trying to make things right in his life. Jacob was preparing to meet with his older brother after so many years. But he met God first in a place later called Peniel.
Before Jacob receive his blessings, the Lord ask him a simple question: “What is your name?”. I believe that the true question, and what Jacob understands is: “Who are you?”. As Jacob answered saying his name, it was kind of a confession of who he truly is, not just the name but from his true identity.
God’s blessing come in a way of saying: I can change who you are, because you have overcome the struggles you had with other people and the struggles he had with me.
First I must confess who I am right now. What are the things that needs to be changed in my character. Then, in Christ I will find my true identity and what he created me to be.
Lord, I help me to be a better person. Help me to see who I was and what you already transformed me. Help me to see where I still need to change to be who you meant me to be. In Jesus name,
