‘You say, “I am allowed to do anything” —but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.’
1 Corinthians 10:23-24
‘I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved. ‘
1 Corinthians 10:33
Some people think that when you became a christian, you get stuck in thousands of rules that must be followed. They focus their lives on the “don’ts” and forget about the “dos”. The truth is that Jesus came to set us free. Free from everything that was holding us back in a relationship with God. He brought to us the freedom.
In this section of the chapter, Paul’s main message is to respect the opinion of the others. He wants to say that even we are “allowed to do anything”, not everything is good nor beneficial to others. And then, he brings us back to show love to one another.
There are a lot of subject in christianity that people label as “sin”. Some it is more about the local culture and how the society sees it. For example, today in Brazil if a christian has a tattoo it not a big deal, but in Japan that is related with gangsters. In Brazil, most christians choose to don’t drink alcohol because of families with alcoholics, but in another countries, they don’t see it as a big issue.
Paul brings a answer saying that is a “question of conscience”. Sometimes for us there is no harm in some of our action, but what about the opinion of others? How the believers or non believers around us see the way we live our lives? Are we stumble others or bring them more close to God? Is is doing good and bringing benefits to others or is the opposite?
In the end of the chapter Paul mention “I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.” Our actions must be thinking in the others, specially so that many way be saved.
- What are the things I am doing in my life that is good or beneficial to others?
- What are the things I am doing in my life that isn’t good or beneficial to others?
- Stop thinking only about myself, but do what is best for others.
Father, thank you that you brought me freedom. Help me to use this freedom I have to benefit others and do good to them. Help me to think more about others, specially the ones that does not know you yet. In Jesus name I pray.
